Miners Blank Islanders

Cochenour Ontario – October 28, 2023

The Kenora Islanders made their inaugural trip up Highway 105 to the Cochenour Arena to face the Red Lake Miners for the first time in SIJHL regular season action. Matthew Stephens brother of Miners alumni Jackson Stephens would get the start for the visitors while Ethan Neitsch started in net for the Miners.

Carter Deschamps would open the scoring for the home side at 7:55 using Mcpherson as a decoy on a 2 on 1 beating Stephens for his 2nd of the season.  Brody Lindal would make it 2-0 for the home team at 10:27 with his 4th of the season.  Nathan Dann took advantage of an opportunistic bounce at 14:01 scoring in his home debut at the Cochenour Arena for his 4th as a Miner. Andrew Sikora would make it 4-0 just before the intermission with a shorthanded tally his first SIJHL goal.  Miners outshot the Islanders 23-5 in the period.

Miners would continue controlling the play in the second period just as they did in the first.  Justin Gelderland would score his first SIJHL goal in first home game of the season to make it 5-0 at 5:33.  Brody Lindal would notch his second of the night at 8:03  to make it 6-0.  Second period shots favoured the Miners 25-2.

Third period action would see the game continue as the first two periods played out.  In his first game in a Miners uniform Ethan Cerone would score his first and second SIJHL goals at 4:42 and 14:52.  Matthew MacPherson would close out the games scoring with his 3rd of the season at 16:04.  Miners would out shoot the Islanders 29-7 in the third period.

Final score Miners 9 islanders 0.  Ethan Neitsch would pick up his first win and shutout of the season only facing 14 shots.  The Miners peppered Matthew Stephens with 77 shots.
