English River Miners announce 3-year contract extension for head coach/GM Derek Sweet-Coulter

RED LAKE, Ont. – The English River Miners of the Superior International Junior Hockey League has announced they have signed head coach and general manager Derek Sweet-Coulter to a three-year contract extension that will keep him in his current position through the 2019-20 season.

During the 2016-17 campaign Sweet-Coulter oversaw the team’s most successful regular season in club history, which included a franchise- record 31 wins.

The English River Miners Board of Directors gave the following statement on the contract extension:

“The Miners organization is extremely happy to have Derek back for another three seasons in his dual role as general manager and head coach of the English River Miners.”

“The amount of hard work Derek has dedicated to the program. both on and off the ice, has not gone unnoticed by the organization, making the decision to extend his contract not only an easy one. but one well deserved.”

Sweet-Coulter inherited a team that went 10-45-5 in 2014-15 and finished last in the SIJHL standings.

He has moulded the English River Miners into a hard-working team with a never quit attitude. Sweet-Coulter has also implemented a culture that has players volunteering in the community.

“I am very excited to remain a part of the Miners organization for the next three years as we continue to build and develop a solid program,” stated Sweet-Coulter.

“I would like to thank my staff and our players, who have worked extremely hard for this organization, on and off the ice,” added the English coach and GM.

“Without their hard work and determination to get better every day I wouldn’t be in this position.”

The Miners continue their SIJHL semifinal playoff series against the Thunder Bay North Stars Wednesday and Thursday at Cochenour Arena. Game time both nights is 7:30 p.m., with the best-of-seven affair currently tied at 1-1.
