Young reaches 60 goals as Miners top Lakers

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Bryce Young became just the second player in Superior International Junior Hockey League history to reach the 60-goal plateau in a season by scoring three times Saturday as the Red Lake Miners defeated the Fort Frances Lakers 5-3 at Ice for Kids Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Brett Hahkala put Fort Frances in front 3:12 into the second stanza.

Young got that back 10 and a half minutes later only to see Jaedin Ness give the Lakers the lead once more at 16:15.

However, Young drew the visitors level for a second time before the session was complete as he finished off a Ty Lawrence feed.

Fort Frances took their third lead of the evening early in the third thanks to Noah Loveday, only to see Red Lake notched the equalizer yet again with Morgan Venne supplying the tying tally.

Keegan Tiringer then gave the Miners the eventual winner at 4:39 before Young finished off a hat trick with a shorthanded goal into an empty net in the late going to round out the night’s scoring.

Vince Benedetto finished with 28 saves to record the win while Matt Booth stopped 31 of 35 in defeat.
