THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay North Stars picked up goals from five different skaters to help them defeat the Red Lake Miners 5-2 Saturday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at the Fort William Gardens.
Keigan Gerrie got the North Stars going four minutes into the contest and whipped his team-leading 15th past Red Lake starter Zach Willms.
The Miners tied it though midway through the opening frame as Shaye Sommerfeld was left with a tap in for his initial SIJHL marker.
Thunder Bay went back on top 4:41 into the second stanza as Alex Erwin buried one from the high slot to make it 2-1.
The home side added to their lead later in the session when Michael Stubbs stuffed in his first league tally 10 minutes later.
Heading to the third, Red Lake pulled back to within one after Sommerfeld redirected a Mike Iatridis right point shot that eluded Dougie Newhouse in the Thunder Bay net.
Brendan Gillis got that back for the North Stars later in the period as he went top shelf on Willms before Alex Matatcic iced it with an empty netter in the final minute to secure the decision.
Thomas Brassard dished out two assists for Thunder Bay in the triumph while Newhouse made 35 saves to record the win.
Willms faced 48 shots in a losing cause for the Miners with Vince Benedetto making one stop in late relief.
