Red Lake rolls over Dryden

RED LAKE, Ont. – Bryce Young notched his second hat trick of the season while newcomer Shaye Sommerfeld doled out three assists in his Superior International Junior Hockey League debut as the Red Lake Miners went on to roll over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 9-4 Tuesday evening at Cochenour Arena.

Red Lake came out quickly in the contest grabbing a 2-0 lead before the contest was two minutes old on tallies by Michael Di Lullo and Connor Jacobs, with the latter picking up his first SIJHL marker.

Jacob Siebenga got one back for Dryden at 2:29, but the Miners tacked on two more as Stratton Pickett and Young both found the back of the net before the first frame was complete to make it 4-1 for the home side after one period of play.

It was more Red Lake in the middle session as they broke it open with four unanswered goals in the stanza to make it an 8-1 game after 40 minutes.

Young, Di Lullo, Pickett and Keilan Toews all connected for the Miners in the period.

After Young capped off his three-goal night with a shorthanded effort early in the third, the GM Ice Dogs battled back by notching a trio of tallies to round out the night’s scoring.

A man-down marker from Braden Shea, a power play goal courtesy of Will Fletcher for his first in league play and an even strength effort off the stick of affiliate player Bradley Fortier, who also notched his opening SIJHL goal, all scored for Dryden.

Along with the three helpers for Sommerfeld, Kyle Uzelman, Ethan Stuckless, Spencer Milne and Toews each had two assists to aide the Miners’ offensive cause.

Zach Willms made 26 saves in the Red Lake net to pick up the win for his side.

Jordan Wilde started for the GM Ice Dogs and suffered the loss allowing six against on 22 attempts while Carison Murison handled 22 of 25 in over 37 minutes of relief.
