The Red Lake Miners looked at home in their first game away from the Cochenour Arena this young SIJHL season.
The Miners dictated the pace early and exploded for three in the final frame en route to a 6-4 win over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs at the Memorial Arena Friday night.
The Ice Dogs came out flat to open the game as the Miners dominated with their forecheck and crashing the net.
Jordan Baranesky got things going for the Miners as he made a nifty move in the slot to find a wide-open Lucas Piekarczyk who buried it right over the glove of Dylan Kosick just 4:52 into the game.
Red Lake would continue to pour it on with chances to pad their lead including three consecutive powerplay opportunities, but the Ice Dogs number one penalty kill stepped up to keep it a one goal game.
With Brady Harroun in the penalty box late, Red Lake would continue to attack, creating two shorthanded chances at the end of the period but Kosick made two straight sprawling saves before the buzzer finally went.
A scrum at the end resulted in a five-minute major call to Dryden GM captain Cameron Ware for a a hit to the head and a game misconduct.
The Ice Dogs stumbled out of the gate once again to start the second with a too many men penalty 1:36 in resulting in a 5-3 advantage for Red Lake.
Dryden GM answered and was seconds away from getting out of the jam, but a couple of failed clearing attempts and quick puck movement resulted in the first SIJHL goal for Logan Arseneault.
Alim Darmenov would pick up his first point in the league with an assist, while Ethan Pool also received a helper.
A Treston Moisey holding call midway through the second sparked the Ice Dogs who finally found their legs.
Maxime Coullette picked up the puck after a quick faceoff win, walked in and had two chances on the doorstep, before he eventually found the back of the net, only 7 seconds after the penalty was called.
Dryden GM didn’t let up and 42 seconds later the success in the faceoff circle once again paid off as Brady Frattinger won a clean draw, set-up Ian Kimble and Derek Koivisto would finish things to tie the game at 2.
However, penalty trouble for the Ice Dogs once again changed momentum as Kolby Adair was assessed a tough cross-checking penalty during a defensive zone one-on-on battle.
Red Lake’s hometown hero Jordan Baranesky would make them pay as he would score his first of the campaign with Nic Bolin and Kenyon Nyman earning assists to enter the break with a 3-2 lead.
There were a couple of back breaking moments for the Dryden GM Ice Dogs in the third that ended up being the difference in the game.
First, a Mitchell Battersby clearing attempt up the middle of his own zone was swallowed up and an Ethan Pool point shot was re-directed by Baranesky to make it a 4-2 advantage.
Less than a minute later, a designed play from Dryden would make things interesting as Kale Hancock won an offensive face-off. Standing a couple of feet behind at the top of the circle was Max Collette who buried it past Dylan Barton, who was making his first SIJHL start in net.
However, the second turning point moment came about 1:30 later when an Adam Ferriera knuckler from just inside the blueline handcuffed Dylan Kosick making with a 5-3 game.
After that, Brady Harroun would bank one just off the bottom of the crossbar and in to make it 6-3, with Dryden’s Noah Schindel taking advantage of a miss by Barton in the final minute to cut the lead to two.
Red Lake was 2/7 with the man advantage, while Dryden GM went 2/5.
Announced shots were 32-26 for the Ice Dogs with Vancouver’s Dylan Barton earning his first victory.
He relieved Cole Wheaton on September 24 against Thunder Bay and allowed 4 goals on 8 shots in 14:57 of ice time.
