The Thunder Bay North Stars made the trek up the 105 to the Cochenour for the start of the SIJHL season. Competing for the first time as the Red Lake Miners after changing the name during the summer the Miners were looking to give an opening night crowd some excitement. Dougie Newhouse would start for the visiting North Stars while Vince Benedetto got his first start for the Miners.
Fans didn’t have to wait long as Ryan Patterson took a pass from Kyle Uzelman beating Newhouse for a 1-0 lead just 1:29 into the 1st period.North Stars would answer back with goals from Matthew Halushak and Keighan Gerrie for a 2-1 lead. Bailey Hartman would score his first Junior ‘A’ goal at 17:27 to tie the game at 2. After 20 minutes of play the score is tied at 2 with the North Stars holding the edge in shots 14-9.
Kyle Uzelman would core his first of the SIJHL season at 4:36 to give the Miners a 3-2 lead. That lead was short lived as Thunder Bay would score four unanswered goals before the end of the period. Keighan Gerrie had 3 of those goals giving him 4 on the night. Vince Benedetto made some bigs saves during the second period but after 40 minutes of play the North Stars lead 6-3.
Starting the 3rd on a power play the Miners would get back into the game when Stratton Pickett would get his first of the SIJHL to make it a 2 goal game at 1:03. Dougie Newhouse would shut the door the rest of the way facing shots from all angles but nothing really to hard. Final score Thunder Bay North Stars 6 Red Lake Miners 4.
