Minnesota @ Red Lake – January 11, 2019

On a cool winter day after winter has finally hit the north the Minnesota Iron Rangers crossed the border and made their way up the 105 to the Cochenour Arena. Vince Benedetto would start in goal for the Miners while Nick Corneliusen would start for the Rangers.

First period action saw the Miners pick up the early edge in play.  After firing early shots at Corneiliusen the Miners would get on the scoreboard first, At 6:52 just after a Minnesota penalty expired Shaye Sommerfeld would score his 8th of the season.  Red Lake would make it 2-0 at 16:06 on a beautiful passing play. Sommerfeld got the puck to Tiringer in front of the net who intern slid a nice backhand pass to newcomer Liam Stalwick for his first as a Miner.  After 20 minutes of play the Miners would outshoot the Ranger 16-5 and lead 2-0.

Second period saw some back and forth action and both team taking a Too Many Men penalty,  Bothe goalies would keep the puck from crossing the line with Corneiliusen being the busier of the 2 and making a few beauties.  The Miners would outshoot Minny 21-9 in the second but fail to score in the period and after 40 minutes it’s 2-0 Red Lake.

Corneiliusen would keep up the heavy workload in the 3rd period getting peppered with shots.  The Miners would finally get one past the Rangers goalie late in the period. At 15:42  Michael DiLullo’s 19th of the season on the powerplay would make it 3-0.  Vince Benedetto would keep Minnesota off the board the rest of the way for his first Shutout of his Jr. A career.  Final score Red Lake Miners 3 Minnesota Iron Rangers 0.

With his 19th goal of the season Captain Michael DiLullo would be given the Goldcorp Red Lake Mines “Hard to Play Against” helmet.

Scoring his first goal in his first game as a Miner Liam Stalwick was given the yellow “Mucker” helmet.

The rangers goalie Nick Corneiliusen had a great game stopping 53 of 56 shots.

These two teams face each other again Saturday night at the Cochenour Arena.
