Miners trio leads Red Lake over Fort Frances

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Red Lake Miners trio of Keegan Tiringer, Kyle Uzelman and Morgan Venne posted three points apiece to help lead their side to a 5-2 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Saturday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Ice for Kids Arena.

Fort Frances did start quickly, notching the evening’s opening tally 34 seconds in on a Reece Hopfner effort.

The Miners countered though by striking three times in the back half of the first frame as Venne, Jackson Stephens and Tiringer all found the back of the net.

It was more Red Lake in the second stanza as they tacked on two more to take a four-goal cushion into the intermission.

Uzelman had the first one at 12:05 for his 11th of the season before Stratton Pickett notched his 23rd for the Miners a couple of shifts later.

An early power play in the third helped the Lakers pull closer, with Nate Drobnick blasting one from the left point for his fifth.

However, Red Lake shut the door the rest of the way to earn the road victory.

Zach Willms made 33 saves to record the win for the Miners with Fort Frances netminder Matt Booth seeing 39 shots fired his way in defeat.

The same two teams meeting again Tuesday at Cochenour Arena in Red Lake.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
