After dropping the opening game of the weekend on Friday night the Red Lake Miners regrouped and battled to win the next two games to take 4 out of 6 points available from the Kam River Fighting Walleye.
Friday night the Walleye opened the scoring up early going up 1-0 just 22 seconds into the first period. the Walleye would go up 2-0 before the Miners would cut the lead to 2-1 on a shorthanded goal from Ethan Cerone. 2 goals within a minute would put the Walleye up 4-1 before the Miners got a late tally. After 20 minutes the Walleye led 4-2.
Isiah Kinnavanthong and Aiden Corbett exchanged goals early in the second period to make it 5-3 Walleye. 2 more goals from the Walleye would make it a 7-3 game after 40 minutes of play.
Both teams would each get a goal in the third period to make the final 8-4 for the Walleye. Ashton Sadauskas picked up his 18th win in net for the Walleye.
Game 2 Saturday night would prove to be a better start for the Miners. Preston Tauter scored his 6th of the season on the power play to get on the board first at 15:19 of the first. Aiden Corbett would score his 22nd on the power play at 19:49 to give the Miners a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Caleb Labelle scored his 3rd of the season with a one timer from the point at 2:51of the second to cut the lead to 2-1. Neither team could generate another goal and the Miners led 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Third period action had the Miners special teams successfully killing of 4 Kam River power play opportunities. The Walleye pulled Travis VanderZwagg with 2:36 left in the third and had pressure for the rest of the period but could not get the right bounce or solve Noah Davis. Final score Miners 2 Walleye 1.Noah Davis was spectacular for the Miners making 40 saves to pick up his 9th win.
With the series tied at 1 game apiece the rubber match was set for the Sunday afternoon game.
Luke DeCorby opened the scoring at 8:05 of the first with his 12th of the season on the power play. just over two minutes later Andrew Sikora scored his 5th of the season. Ryker Watt made it 3-0 at 17:02 with his 9th of the season and first as Miner in the Cochenour Arena. Two goals in just over a minute during 4 on 4 play would make it 3-2 heading into the first intermission.
Jared Burnett scored his 5th of the season to open up second period scoring to put the Miners up by 2. Carter Poddubny would score his 16th to make it a one goal game at 10:31. Carter Deschamps scored his 10th at 13:38 followed by Ethan Cerone’s 8th at 17:49 would give the Miners a 6-3 lead after 40 minutes.
After a penalty filled first and second period the third period went quick with little stoppages and no scoring. Final score Miners 6 Walleye 3. Jackson Pundyk picked up his second win as a Miner while Ashton Sadauskas had his afternoon finished after two periods took the loss for the Walleye.
Kam River went 0/21 on the power play over the 3 game set and gave up one short handed goal. Miners went 6/19 on the power play for the weekend.
