Red Lake, ON – Red Lake Miners Head Coach and General Manager Lee Stone has announced the signing of 2005-born defenseman Hunter Cobb for the 2023/24 Superior International Junior Hockey League season.
“Hunter first came to my attention through our Alberta Scout Colten Hayes,” Stone commented about finding Cobb. “Hayzer was beyond confident in what Hunter could do at this level and I was lucky enough to get a chance to see him play back in May. He’s an extremely talented defenseman with a high end brain for the game. He plays the game the way we want our defenders today to play; his feet are up ice and he’s very smooth in transition. He is very confident with the puck north of the blue line too, he’ll help us create offence from the backend,” Stone continued.
Cobb, a native of Okotoks, AB, played last season with the Okotoks u18 AA program tallying 10-19-29 in 27 games played making him the 3rd highest scoring defender in the SCAHL. Cobb also tallied 0-1-1 in 5 games played for the HJHL’s Okotoks Bisons.
“I’m looking forward to playing in front of a great crowd and for a town that supports the team so strongly. Playing in a league where I can play against good competition every night means a lot to me. Even more so to play for a team that will push me forward in my career and allow for the chance to play college hockey,” Cobb said after signing with the Miners. “I would consider myself a two way defenseman that plays solid on the defensive side and has good first pass. I like to jump up in the rush when I see fit and make plays in the offensive end. My short term goal is to win a championship with Red Lake as continue to develop as a player. My long term goal is to move onto the NCAA to get an education and hopefully one day play professional hockey,” he explained.
The 6’1”, 183lbs defenseman is currently skating back at home and will be at Miners Main Camp in early September. Please welcome Hunter to the Miners family!
