Miners score 3 in 3rd to hold off Iron Rangers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – After letting an early lead slip away the English River Miners regrouped by scoring three times on the power play in the third period to pull out a 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers Sunday afternoon in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Braeden Pearce sent the Miners on their way 2:44 into the contest as he collected his 10th of the season.

Michael Di Lullo upped the visitors lead two minutes later before teammate Matt O’Neill supplied a shorthanded effort with six seconds left in the session.

Minnesota did get on the board 6:24 into the middle stanza thanks to Isaiah Olschewske’s sixth of 2016-17.

They then struck twice in a 31-second span as Cole Thompson notched his eighth and ninth tallies of the campaign to knot the affair at 3-3.

The offensive outburst continued for Minnesota as Joe Mata gave the home side their first lead of the day at 16:49 to go up by one.

A two-man advantage in the final stanza allowed English River to knot the contest at 4-4 as Sam Cirone scored on the power play at 1:24.

Up a skater again later in the third allowed the Miners to get the game-winner as Di Lullo tipped in his second of the day with 6:40 remaining in regulation.

English River then added some insurance with yet another power play goal as Trevor Pereverzoff rounded out the scoring at 16:49.

The Miners outshot the Iron Rangers 43-35 with Spencer Eschyschyn picking up the win and Sean Angle the loss.
