Miners hold off Lakers to complete weekend sweep

RED LAKE, Ont. – Bryce Young tallied twice and then assisted on the game-winner as the Red Lake Miners held on for a 4-3 win over the visiting Fort Frances Lakers in a Superior International Junior Hockey League encounter Saturday at Cochenour Arena.

After defeating Fort Frances handily Friday, Red Lake came out strong in this one as well grabbing a 2-0 lead after one period of play on markers from Ethan Stuckless, at even strength, and Young, via the man advantage.

Picking up an early power play in the second stanza, the Miners added to their lead 1:59 in on Young’s second of the night and team-leading eighth overall.

Up a skater once more, the home side made it 4-0 six and a half minutes into the session as Spencer Milne supplied his fourth.

Nick Lucas put the Lakers on the board at 12:27 of the frame as he too connected with the man advantage to make it 4-1 after two.

Battling back in the third, Fort Frances saw both Cole Allan and Nik Hahkala collect their first SIJHL goals to bring the visitors to within one with still 7:46 remaining in regulation.

However, the Miners’ defence stiffened from there to hold on for the victory and help them improve to 5-1 on the year.

Keilan Toews and Ethan Stuckless chipped in with two assists apiece for Red Lake in the triumph as did Kirk Coppock for the Lakers in their setback.

Shots on goal on the night favoured Red Lake by a 33-28 margin with Vince Benedetto picking up the win while Jacob Gnidziejko suffered the defeat as Fort Frances slipped to 4-4.
