Miners blast visiting Lakers

COCHENOUR, Ont. – A seven-goal second period outburst sent the English River Miners on their way to a one-sided 9-3 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Tuesday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Cochenour Arena.

English River took a 2-1 lead after one period of play on markers from Zak Albers and Michael Di Lullo while Anthony Antonelli scored for Fort Frances on the power play in the session.

The Miners then broke it open by striking four times before the middle stanza was 10 minutes old to take control.

It began with Tucker Evans’ first SIJHL tally 96 seconds into the frame before Stratton Pickett and Matt O’Neill connected in quick order for the home side to make it 5-1.

English River kept coming at 9:28 thanks to Terix Fischer-Kobes’ initial goal of the season to extend the Miners’ cushion.

Jaedin Ness got one back for the Lakers during a man advantage opportunity only to see the Miners’ strike three times before the end of the period off the sticks of Spencer Milne, Cody Milgate and Colton Cameron.

Fort Frances notched the final goal of the game in the third on Jack Bernie’s fourth of the campaign with seven minutes to go.

Nic Herringer had three assists for English River in the romp while teammate Milne had a couple of helpers to go with his tally.

Westin Cardwell made 27 saves to record the win for the Miners.

Brett Akins started for the Lakers and suffered the loss while Rob Ivy also saw action on the night as the duo faced 47 shots against in the loss.
