Milne scores twice; Willms posts shutout as Miners blank Lumberjacks

SPOONER, Wis. – The Red Lake Miners got a pair of goals from Spencer Milne while their netminder Zach Willms stopped all 34 shots he faced to post his third shutout of the season in a 2-0 triumph over the Wisconsin Lumberjacks in Superior International Junior Hockey League action Thursday night at the Spooner Civic Center.

A chippy opening frame saw Red Lake collect the only marker in the session as Milne took a Ryan Howe feed from the left side and stuffed in the night’s opening tally from in close past Wisconsin starter Nathan Mueller at 11:52, late into a man advantage opportunity.

The Miners held their lead through the rest of the first period as well as through a scoreless middle session as they carried their slim lead into the final frame.

There, Milne rounded out the scoring with 8:38 to play as he blocked a shot in his own zone, skated up the ice and worked a give-and-go with Bryce Krauter before eventually banging in his second of the night and 18th overall to secure the road victory.

With the shutout, Willms is now tied for the league-lead in 2019-20 with the Lumberjacks’ Mueller, who faced 20 attempts in defeat.
