Dryden 4 @ Fort Frances 5, Tue Nov 22
It was a fine game for Brenden Stroble as he stopped 30 shots in the second period alone, and 63 of 67 overall, and the Fort Frances Lakers defeated Dryden 5-4 in Fort Frances.
Dryden took a 3-1 lead into the third, but two late second period penalties had them down two players to start the frame. Brady Krentz scored at 1:56 on the power play, Dylan Wedward notched a short-handed goal to tie it up and it was game-on after that.
Eli Nielson scored his first goal as a Laker to give the hometown boys the lead. Derek Koivisto notched his first as an Ice Dog to tie it up 4-4 at 15:25. Kevin Bond scored the winner at 18:45, his fourth, on assists from Ryker Watt and Clark Scaddan.
Stroble held the fort the rest of the way. Stroble faced 18-30-19 shots in his three periods of work.
“Strobie’s caught fire,” said Fort Frances head coach Paul McLean. “He’s been doing a good job. The Tanner kid I like (Ryan). We’re building. One thing about the guys we’ve got here. Win, lose, or draw they never quit. . . Definitely I think this game should give our guys some good confidence going in.”
The Lakers picked up win number three on Stroble’s exceptional evening and four third period goals.
James Hooton, Landen Stromme and Ty Moore had first period goals for Dryden while Scaddan collected his 8th for Fort Frances. There was no scoring in the second frame.
Bond added two helpers to his three-point night. Scaddan had an assist and Watt two assists for the Lakers. Dryden had 10 players collect a point.
The Dogs fell to 10-5-0.
Eric Clark took the loss for Dryden, turning aside 22 of 27. Stroble garnered his first win of the year.
The Ice Dogs were 1-7 with the man advantage. The Lakers were 1-9.
The 173 fans in attendance were treated to a great show.
Sioux Lookout 4 @ Red Lake 3, Wed Nov 23
Hometown Red Lake scored three in the third period to overcome a 3-0 deficit, but Ty Bahm scored the only goal in the shootout to give Sioux Lookout a 4-3 win.
Aidan Milburn and Lucas Trimarchi gave the Bombers a 2-0 lead after 20. Owen Riffel added his fifth in the middle frame to pad the lead. Red Lake scored on three of six shots to knot the score in the third stanza. Colton Crysler scored his 10th and 11th, and Quintyn Sidaway tied it up with his third of the year at 11:16.
Three minors penalties were called in overtime. Sioux Lookout managed four shots, Red Lake none, in extra time. Bahm scored the game winner on the first shot of the shootout. Jake Manners stoned three Red Lake shooters for his 8th win against four losses. He stopped 26 of 29. Jack Osmond stopped 34 in a losing cause.
Trimarchi added an assist for 17 points on the year. Patrick Graeme had two assists for Sioux Lookout. Sidaway added an assist, and Aiden Corbett had a pair of helpers raising his season total to 15. Corbett sits 7th in league scoring with 23 points.
The third period was the most physical. Sioux Lookout was 0-6 and Red Lake 0-5 on the power play. Cochenour Arena attracted 186 patrons.
Sioux Lookout 4 @ Kam River 0 Fri, Sioux Lookout 2 @ Kam River 5 Sat, Nov 25/26
Jake Manners had a 47-save shutout, and Blake Burke had a pair of first period power play goals as the Bombers powered to a 4-0 win over Kam River at Norwest Arena. Another robust crowd of 675 was in attendance. Ty Bahm opened the scoring at 6:38. Burke followed with his pair for a 3-0 Bomber lead.
There was no scoring from there on in, until Lucas Trimarchi scored into an empty net with 38 seconds left to go.
It was the first home shutout loss in Walleye history.
Burke has nine goals on the season. Trimarchi has 8. Nolan Palmer had two assists in the game.
Jack Orchard turned aside 36 shots in the loss.
Sioux Lookout was 2-6 with a man up, while Kam was 0-3. Sioux Lookout took six of 15 minor penalties.
On Saturday Geoff Walker collected his first win as head coach of the Fighting Walleye as Kam River scored three on the power play to defeat Sioux Lookout 5-2.
Jeremy Dunmore had a pair of goals, and was part of a third period uprising that saw the Walleye break a 2-2 tie with three unanswered starting at 8:13 of the frame.
Blake Burke gave the Bombers a 1-0 lead through 20. Ryan Doucette and Dunmore scored power play goals late in the second for a 2-1 Kam River edge.
Alex Lucas registered a power play marker for Red Lake to even the score. Mackenzie Sedgwick scored the game-winner two minutes later, Dunmore added an insurance marker, and Anthony Oviedo scored an empty netter to send the crowd of 523 home happy.
Dunmore also had an assist, Doucette had two points, and Ethan Lang and Jack Cook had three apples each. Lang has 21 assists on the year.
Eric Vanska stopped 33 of 35 for his 12th win. Jake Manners relieved Odin Church after two periods and took the loss. Kam River had 40 shots.
The Bombers went 1-7 on the power play. Kam River was 3-6.
Fort Frances 4 @ Red Lake 3 (OT) Fri, Fort Frances 3 @ Red Lake 2 Sat, Nov 25/26
Goaltender Brenden Stroble was at it again, Ryker Watt and Darnell Kempf tied it up in the third, and Brenden Hill scored at 1:35 of overtime, as the Fort Frances Lakers defeated Red Lake 4-3.
Stroble made 42 saves for his second win. The Lakers have risen from the mat and won two in a row.
Kyle Schechtel notched his seventh for a 1-0 Miners’ lead through one. Dylan Wedward fired a power play marker to tie it up in the second. Jacob Lamoureux registered his league-leading 18th goal on assists from Colton Crysler and Aiden Corbett at 8:07, and Trever Sanderson added a power play effort to provide a 3-1 Red Lake margin.
Watt pumped in his seventh and Kempf his second (with Watt assisting) to send it into overtime. Seven shots were fired in 95 seconds of extra time, with Hill’s effort sending the visitors to the win.
Watt collected a goal and two assists to pace the Laker attack. Lamoureux had two points and Matthew MacPherson chipped in with two helpers to bolster Red Lake’s offense.
Lamoureux has 24 points, Crysler and Corbett 23 apiece.
Jack Osmond shouldered the loss, dropping his record to 9-4-2.
Fort was 1-3 on the power play while Red Lake was 1-5. The Lakers took 8 of 14 minor penalties.
In Saturday’s game Red Lake fired 57 shots at Stroble including 25 in the second period. No matter. He stopped 55 of them for his third win in four days as the Lakers defeated Red Lake 3-2.
Fort Frances has won three in a row.
Cooper Fink powered the Lakers with a pair of goals and Ethan Raduy added a solo for Fort. Both Fink and Raduy scored their first goals as Lakers.
Red Lake had three players register a pair of points each. Jacob Lamoureux scored his 19th, Crysler his 12th. Lamoureux’ 26 points slots him third in league scoring. Crysler and Aiden Corbett have 25 points each. Corbett’s two assists give him 17 helpers.
Crysler opened the scoring in the first. Raduy tied it. Lamoureux gave Red Lake a 2-1 lead. Fink evened the game at 17:13 of the second, and scored the game winner on the power play at 13:13 of the third.
Jack Osmond made 29 saves in the Red Lake net.
Fort Frances was 1-4 with the man advantage, while Red Lake was 0-5.
Only 11 minor penalties were assessed.
Thunder Bay 5 @ Dryden 4, Sat Nov 26
Two very good teams tied in points and games played squared off in Dryden. The North Stars continued their hot hand with a 5-4 win over the Ice Dogs. Thunder Bay is undefeated in six while Dryden’s on a two-game slide.
Three first-period goals were scored in a span of 1:59. Dylan Winsor scored his first of two at 4:32. Derek Koivisto tied it 55 seconds later. Winsor connected at 6:31 on the power play for a 2-1 North Star lead.
Max Roby picked up his seventh goal in seven games with a power play effort one minute into the second to knot it at 2. Jamie Fuchs regained the North Star lead only to have Ryland Maier score eight seconds later. Fuchs’ second goal of the game at 18:28 and made it 4-3 Thunder Bay.
Jake Parker made it 5-3. Ben Hackl tightened it up with a power play at 17:27 but Conner Lemieux shut the door for his fifth win. Eric Clark came on for Zac MacDonald at 7:33 of the second and took the loss.
Fuchs added an assist to give him nine points in just four games. Liam Murdoch added two assists.
Thunder Bay took 38 of 72 penalty minutes.
Thunder Bay was 1-7 on the power play. Dryden’s 2-4 effort put them ahead of Thunder Bay in power play efficiency for the season.
Dryden attracted 650 fans.
