Lakers edge Miners 3-2 in OT

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – An Anthony Antonelli goal 2:57 into overtime was the difference as the Fort Frances Lakers rallied to edge the visiting Red Lake Miners 3-2 Friday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League exhibition affair at Ice for Kids Arena.

Red Lake picked up the lone tally of the opening period as Kyle Uzelman connected 8:17 into the contest.

The score stayed that way until 85 seconds into the third when the Miners’ Kevin Duguid upped the visitors lead to 2-0.

Commencing their comeback, Fort Frances got on the board eight and a half minutes into the session compliments of Nick Lucas.

The Lakers then drew level with 5:12 remaining in regulation on an Ethan Knutsen effort.

Fort Frances had a chance to win in the final seconds of third, but Red Lake goaltender Vince Benedetto thwarted a Lakers’ breakaway.

However, the home side would prevail in OT thanks to Antonelli’s heroics.

The Lakers held a 50-37 margin in shots on goal with Matt Booth picking up the win while Bendetto’s efforts kept his side in it in the narrow setback.

The clubs will finish off the preseason Saturday night in Red Lake in a 7:30 p.m. CT start at Cochenour Arena.
