Janke tallies twice as Miners get past North Stars

COCHENOUR, Ont. – The English River Miners picked up a pair of goals from Jared Janke to help them prevail 6-4 over the Thunder Bay North Stars in Superior International Junior Hockey League play Thursday at Cochenour Arena.

A free-wheeling first period saw each side tally twice in the session to make it 2-2 after 20 minutes.

After Keighan Gerrie put Thunder Bay in front with an even-strength effort at 8:16, special teams picked up with the clubs notching three consecutive power play markers.

Avery Siau’s fouth put the North Stars up by two less than three minutes later before English River countered with man advantage efforts from Janke and Spencer Milne to level the proceedings heading into the middle stanza.

Thunder Bay was quick to retake the lead in that session as Gerrie notched his second of the night to put the visitors back in front.

English River countered with markers from Janke and Matt O’Neill to go up 4-3 before Siau struck again for the visitors at 19:29.

The Miners did get the eventual game-winner 75 seconds into the third from Coleton Johnson before Jordan Baranesky iced it with a late empty netter for his first SIJHL goal to seal the victory for English River.

Zak Albers doled out three assists to aid English River offensively.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured the Miners 43-36 with Weston Cardwell picking up the win and Dougie Newhouse the loss.

The same two teams meet again Friday back at Cochenour Arena.
