On a snowy slushy Saturday night the Fort Frances Lakers and the Red Lake Miners would square off for the second night in a row at the Cochenour Arena. Jacob Gnidziejko would start for the Lakers while the Miners would go with Vince Benedetto between the pipes.
Fort Frances would get early pressure on the Miners but after a few minutes the Miners would start to push back. Ethan Stuckless would pounce on a rebound from a Zhong point shot beating Gnidziejko for a 1-0 lead at 9:02. Bryce Young would make it 2-0 Miners on the power play at 18:48. Young took a pass from Stuckless and rip a wrist shot over Gnidziejko’s glove.There is no more scoring in the period and after 20 minutes the Miners lead 2-0.
An early second period power play would see the Miners take a 3-0 lead. Bryce Young’s second of the game and 8th of the season taking a pass from Stuckless beating Gnidziejko with another wrist shot. At 6:29 Spencer Milne would take a pass from DiLullo on a 5 on 3 power play and blow it past Gnidziejko for a 4-0 lead. Nick Lucas would get the Lakers on the board at 12:14 with a power play marker to make it 4-1. That would be it for scoring in the period and after 40 minutes of play the Red Lake Miners lead 4-1.
Cole Allan would open the third period scoring with a wrist shot over the shoulder of Benedetto for his first goal of the year at 7:38 to make it 4-2. At 12:14 Nick Hahkala would bang a rebound home for his first goal as a Laker to make it 4-3. he Miners would clamp down and fight of the Lakers the rest of the way with Benedetto shutting the door making a few big saves. Final score Red Lake Miners 4 Fort Frances Lakers 3.
Goldcorp Red Lake Mines “Hard To Play Against” Helmet went to Vince Benedetto who recorded his first Junior ‘A’ win in front of his parents who made the trip up to Red Lake.
Connor Jacobs wearing #25 for the Miners was given the yellow “Mucker” of the night helmet.
