Red Lake 6 @ Sioux Lookout 3, Wed Oct 26
Jacob Lamoureux scored a hat trick as the visiting Red Lake Miners defeated the Sioux Lookout Bombers 6-3. Lamoureux’ outburst gives him 10 on the year, tops in the SI.
Lamoureux scored the first two of the game. Colton Crysler scored on a penalty shot as the Miners carved out a 3-0 lead by 7:17 of the second. Crysler’s effort came with Red Lake down a man. Bomber goalie Raphael Marois was injured on the play (ankle) and was replaced by Odin Church. Lamoureux beat Church from the right circle at 10:32 for a 4-0 lead, before Lucas Trimarchi and Blake Burke cut the margin to 4-2 after two periods.
Crysler scored again at 1:41 of the third, his sixth, to regain a three-goal Red Lake lead. Alex Lucas would tally his first of the season at 12:55 for the Bombers to shave it down. Sioux Lookout pulled Church with 2:34 left while starting a power play.
Osmond held firm, Aiden Corbett scored an empty-netter with 19.4 seconds left and the Miners evened their record at 5-5-1.
Osmond stopped 35 of 38 shots for his fourth win. He leads the SIJHL with a 2.14 goals against and .938 SV%.
Red Lake fired 54 shots. Marois stopped 31 of 34 and Church 17 of 19.
The Miners were 1-1 on the powerplay, while Sioux Lookout was 0-6.
Referees Steven Anderson and Travis Batters handed out four 10-minute misconducts at 3:57 of the second period, and a 5-minute major to Quintyn Sidaway for checking from behind, as part of the 67 penalty minutes dished out.
Attendance at the Hangar was 389.
Kam River 4 @ Red Lake 1, Thu Oct 27
Kam River won their tenth game and Eric Vanska stopped 28 of 29 shots as the Fighting Walleye opened their three-game road trip with a 4-1 win over short-staffed Red Lake.
Colton Crysler opened the scoring for Red Lake at 8:21 of the first in a quickly played initial period. Only one penalty was assessed.
Kam River did the rest of the scoring, notching two in the second and a pair in the third. New acquired Ryland Semaniuk tied it up at 6:24, Daxton Lang scored unassisted at 12:20 for the lead. Max Leduc and Anthony Oviedo padded the margin in the third.
The Walleye distributed their scoring amongst nine different players.
Jack Osmond stopped 31 of 35 for Red Lake.
Kam River would pick up 45 minutes in penalties and Red Lake 29 in the final 40 minutes. Remarkably, the Walleye did not have a single power play, while the Miners went 0-5 with the man advantage.
Attendance was not announced.
Thunder Bay 5 @ Wisconsin 6, Thunder Bay 4 @ Wisconsin 1, Fri/Sat Oct 28/29.
Last Friday Wisconsin coughed up a 3-1 second period lead to lose 4-3 to Thunder Bay in regulation. This Friday it was Thunder Bay’s turn to take it on the chin.
Ryder McMillen scored at 0:54 of the third, Zach Carson sniped at 17:10, and Zach Johnson ended the contest at 0:47 of overtime as the Lumberjacks overcame a two-goal third period deficit to defeat the North Stars 6-5. Thunder Bay did salvage a point in game one of the weekend series.
Carson led the Wisconsin charge with a hat trick. He has 10 goals on the season, tied with Jacob Lamoureux of Red Lake for the league lead.
Carson opened the scoring at 6:23 of the first. Nolan Desjardins and Dylan Bertrand gave Thunder Bay a 2-1 lead through 20. The North Stars outscored Wisconsin three goals to two in the second. Dimitri Trahiotis, Edison Weeks and Noah Broughton scored for the visitors. Johnson and Carson replied for Wisconsin. After two periods: Thunder Bay 5, Wisconsin 3.
Cue Wisconsin’s uprising in the third.
Johnson’s game winner in OT gives him five goals on the year. Wisconsin has three of the top point producers in the SIJHL. McMillen has 23, Dillon Phillips, 18, and Carson, 14. Defenceman Dylan Jouppi had three assists for Wisconsin to lead all rearguards with 13 total points. Phillips also had three helpers.
Anthony Kuzenko had three assists for Thunder Bay. Broughton and Trahiotis had two points each.
Kyler Lowden stopped 28 of 33 to pick up the win, while Connor Lemieux faced 39 shots in the Thunder Bay net.
Neither team scored on the powerplay.
Attendance was 235.
Thunder Bay garnered three of four points with a 4-1 win on Saturday.
Keenan Marks had his second remarkable game, stopping 33 of 34. His GAA is 0.96 and SV% .970 in 125 minutes.
Wisconsin’s William Forrester directed 25 of 29 away from the goal line.
The North Stars skated to a 2-0 first period lead. Anthony Kuzenko and Dimitri Trahiotis provided the offence. Rookie Magnus Pearson made it 3-zip, before Salvatore Poggiali tallied at 7:34 of the second. Dillon Phillips and Ryder McMillen collected assists on the play. All three are in the top eight in SIJHL scoring.
Hayden Cattani scored at 16:12 of the third.
Trahiotis and Kuzenko added assists for Thunder Bay. Edison Weeks had an assist to give him 16 points on the season.
Only six minors were called. Thunder Bay was 0-3 and Wisconsin 0-2 with the man advantage.
Attendance was 307.
Fort Frances 4 @ Dryden 8, Fort Frances 2 @ Dryden 7 Fri/Sat Oct 28/29
Bryce Benfield scored three as Dryden defeated Fort Frances 8-4 at the Dryden Memorial Arena. The Ice Dogs have a seven-game winning streak while Fort Frances has lost eight in a row.
Fort Frances fell behind 3-0 but came back to tie it at 3-3 by 5:16 of the second.
Max Roby opened the scoring, followed by Benfield and Jordan Pfoh. Fort Frances would cash twice in a seven second span. Ryker Watt and Clark Scaddan (unassisted) cut the lead to one. At 5:16 of the second Watt tied it up.
Dryden took over from there. Ryland Maier, quickly establishing himself as a top gun (15 points in 9 games through Saturday), scored at the 10-minute mark. Brady Frattinger scored shorthanded and Pfoh added with 26 seconds left in the second to give Dryden a three-goal cushion.
Kevin Bond scored for Fort in the third, but Benfield would collect his second of the game on a powerplay and register his third at 17:41 to salt it away.
Dryden had 19 of the game’s 30 infractions. Fort Frances would click once in 11 chances, while Dryden was 2-4.
Brenden Stroble came on in relief for Kaden King at 13:31 of the first and was saddled with the loss, while Eric Clark stopped 16 of 20 for the Dryden win.
Attendance was 650.
Another 650 fans were on hand on Saturday, as the Ice Dogs put the game away early with five period goals en route to a 7-2 win over Fort Frances.
Dryden won its 8th in a row while the Lakers are mired in a nine-game losing streak.
Ben Hackl, Max Rath and James Hooton got the Ice Dogs on the board for a 3-0 lead. Kevin Bond scored a powerplay marker at 13:13 for the Lakers. Tyler Earl got his first of the season at 13:39. Clark Scaddan replied for Fort at 17:09 and Max Roby tallied his first of two goals at 18:02.
Seven of the games nine goals were scored in the first 20 minutes.
Second period scores by Ryland Maier and Roby (PP) would finish off the scoring.
Ryan Tanner was peppered with 41 Dryden shots–including 18 in the first.
Zac MacDonald picked up his first win of the season for Dryden with a 17-save performance.
Dryden on the plus side in penalty minutes as well. The Ice Dogs accumulated 57 minutes of bin time. The Lakers capitalized once in nine powerplays, while Dryden was 2-7.
Kam River 1 @ Sioux Lookout 4, Kam River 2 @ Sioux Lookout 7 Fri/Sat Oct 28/29
Sioux Lookout swept Kam River over the weekend in a statement series.
Friday’s contest was a 4-1 victory for the home team before 396 patrons.
Powerplay play goals by Alex Lucas and Lucas Trimarchi put the Bombers up 2-0 before Jeremy Dunmore scored on a Kam River powerplay with nine seconds left in the first to make it 2-1.
Graeme Patrick scored the only goal of the second period, and the only goal of the game that wasn’t a powerplay goal.
Owen Riffle would score at 19:56 on the PP to finish it.
Jack Orchard absorbed the loss in Kam River’s net, turning aside 27 of 31, while Jake Manners was named first star of the game with his 35-save effort.
The Walleye were 1-6 on the powerplay, while Sioux Lookout was 3-8.
On Saturday, Sioux Lookout bombed the Walleye with six consecutive goals before Ryland Semaniuk and Anthony Oviedo got two on the board late in the second for Kam River. Lucas Dunne added a late goal in the third for an emphatic 7-2 win against the SI’s top team in the standings.
Surprisingly, Kam River outshot Sioux Lookout 41-22. Jake Manners was golden on 39 shots, while Eric Vanska took the loss.
Tegan Neuman, James Logan and Owen Riffle’s powerplay marker got Sioux Lookout off to a 3-0 lead after one. Phil Parker, Ty Bahm and Parker again (unassisted) upped the ante to 6-0. Both Parker’s goals were on the powerplay.
Parker’s two goals paced the attack. Neuman added an assist, Braden Clarke had two assists, and Graeme Patrick added four assists to his season total of nine points on the year.
Ethan Lang had two assists for Kam River.
With the game decided early, things turned nasty. Johann Prager and Steve Anderson meted out 89 minutes in penalties. Kam River went 1-7 with the man advantage while the Bombers clicked on three of 11 chances.
The Hangar attracted 344 fans.
