Cardwell collects 1st shutout as Miners blank Iron Rangers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – English River Miners goaltender Westin Cardwell turned aside all 25 shots he faced Friday to post his first Superior International Junior Hockey League shutout in a 2-0 triumph over the Minnesota Iron Rangers at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

The Miners picked up the eventual game-winner midway through the first period as Spencer Milne supplied his 12th tally of the season.

It stayed 1-0 English River until deep into the final frame when Jacob Siebenga added some insurance at 16:13 of the third during a late man advantage opportunity.

Cardwell did the rest to earn the shutout and record the win for the visitors.

Tyler Thompson had a solid effort in defeat for Minnesota making 36 saves in the narrow setback.
