5-goal 2nd sends Miners past North Stars at SIJHL Showcase

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – The English River Miners rode the strength of five second period goals to rally for a 6-2 victory over the Thunder Bay North Stars Wednesday in Day 2 play at the Superior International Junior Hockey League Showcase at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Thunder Bay came out strong to begin the contest grabbing a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on man advantage markers from defencemen Jonathon Masters and Ryan Walsh.

The middle stanza was all English River however as they erupted for their five tallies in a 16-minute span.

Austin Kuhn’s 15th got the Miners on the board early in the session his club’s first of three power play efforts in the stanza.

Braeden Pearce tied it at even strength at 3:10 while Dante Tisi put them in front midway through frame while up a man.

They then made it 4-2 just 19 seconds later compliments of Jared Janke.

English River then chased North Stars’ starter Nathaniel Dupuis at 17:49 on Tisi’s second power play effort of the period.

The Miners would finish off the come from behind win four minutes into the third on Dante Raposo’s second of the season to round out the day’s scoring.

Pearce and Sam Cirone had two assists each to aid the winner’s cause.

Michael Lenko made 20 stops to post the decision for English River.

Dupuis suffered the loss allowing five against on 22 attempts while Jordan Elliott handled 14 of 15 in relief.

SIJHL Showcase action continues with the league-leading Dryden GM Ice Dogs taking on the Minnesota Iron Rangers at 4:15 p.m. CT before concluding with the host Thief River Falls Norskies going up against the Fort Frances Lakers at 7:30 p.m. CT.
